Fear and Faith

There is a lot of fear in our world right now. The Corona virus has had a massive global impact. Stores are out of hand sanitizer, Clorox Wipes and masks. Italy has shutdown schools, transit and many stores. In the US parades, sporting and entertainment events are being canceled, schools have been closed. How do we not live in fear? In the Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 6, Jesus asked how many people could increase their height by worrying. Obviously, no one can. The point here is that worry does not change our circumstances. Worry over the Corona Virus will not change the outcome. We also need to acknowledge that the Bible does teach us to be prepared. In Proverbs 6 we are instructed to consider the way of the ant who gathers in summer to prepare for winter. So, as we face a season of difficulty, how should we respond?

First, do not fear. The events that we are living through today do not catch God off guard. He knows what is going on, what we need and how this will all end. As believers we need to realize that God watches over us and that even if the circumstances of our lives lead us to death, God is still with us. What lies ahead, Heaven, which is greater than what we experience now on this earth. This is not our home.

Second, we should prepare appropriately. Proverbs 6:6-11 teaches us to consider the ant, who makes preparations when there is time. Follow the direction that the CDC has put forward. Wash your hands, stay home if you are sick, follow doctor’s orders. If you are a senior adult or if you have underlying medical issues avoid public gatherings.

Finally, love your neighbor. In times of crisis in our culture, often times the church steps up to help and in so doing demonstrates the love of God to the community around them. Practically speaking, reach out to seniors and shut-ins to see if they need anything. During this time of upheaval be intentional about calling and texting people. These are ways to stay in community with the family of God. There will be times through our work and school relationships that our faith can shine. Don’t shy away from letting people know where your hope is.

God has been taking care of believers down through the ages. He has not changed. If you are fearful today, rest in Him. Make preparations. Be intentional about checking on your neighbors. Finally, let your light shine.
